KRVM Loses CPB Funding

August 15, 2025 by KRVM

KRVM has historically received approximately 20 percent of our annual revenue as grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). More specific information is below, but the bottom line is this: The loss of that CPB funding can only be replaced by local, direct donations from our listeners. If you are already a member, thank you! If you enjoy KRVM programming and want to support what we do for you and the rest of the community, please become a financial supporter today.

Details about the loss of Corporation for Public Broadcasting grants, and the impact on KRVM:

What happened?

Congress voted to “claw-back” $1.1 billion in funding that was already appropriated for CPB for use the next two fiscal years, that was to have been distributed to more than 1300 local public stations, plus NPR and PBS. Federal support of public broadcasting started in 1967, and has been continuous with bi-partisan support until now.

How much is KRVM losing in grant funding?

We received $186,784 from CPB during our Fiscal Year 2025, which ended June 30th. We anticipated a similar grant amount each year moving forward, but we are now slated to received ZERO CPB funding for FY26 and FY27.

Where are the sources of KRVM funding, and what does/did CPB grant funding cover locally?

KRVM has revenue from three main sources: Listener memberships (40%), Business Underwriting (40%), and CPB Grants (20%). CPB funding is used to defray general operating expenses (tower site leases, equipment purchases and maintenance, electricity, engineering expenses, etc.), and cover what would otherwise be losses operating transmitters in Oakridge, Florence, and Reedsport/Coos Bay. One main purpose of CPB funding is to ensure that rural areas have coverage to receive local emergency alerts and other timely community information. Rural areas are not served reliably by commercial radio stations, due to the population base being too small to profitably operate.

How can KRVM replace that funding and maintain current levels of service, and operation of six transmitters?

The majority of the increased local funding will need to come from individual member donors. Currently, less than 10% of the listening audience financially supports KRVM. (note: that level of local support for public radio stations is consistent across the country). To completely replace the lost funds would require membership participation by approximately 15% of listeners.

How can the local communities served by KRVM help?

Current members can keep giving (perhaps increasing the amount of each donation), listeners who are not yet members can begin contributing, and everyone who benefits from and enjoys KRVM programming can recruit new listeners and members for the station by spreading the word and encouraging donations.

What KRVM does for the community:

KRVM Public Radio is for ALL PEOPLE! We plan to continue making the world a better place one song at a time, and we hope you will help us achieve that for years to come. Please encourage friends and family to join, too!

KRVM believes in REAL local voices, and content decisions made by REAL humans – Thanks to your support, every word you hear on the air – and every programming decision – comes directly from a REAL, local volunteer, staff member, or student.

  • The voices you hear on KRVM range in age from 15 to 80+
  • Over half the music each week is selected by women.

KRVM provides REAL TIME on-air alerts and community engagement. Through PSAs and emergency notifications, we let you know what is happening in our broadcast area right NOW. Whether it’s a community event, an evacuation warning, information about services available from a local non-profit group, or simply the weather, KRVM keeps all our listeners informed.

KRVM believes in REAL variety, including the rich assortment of artists and genres in our Adult Album Alternative offerings each weekday, plus nearly 40 specialty programs featuring our volunteer DJs sharing their knowledge and love of an astounding selection of music every evening and all weekend long. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion remains a priority, and we prove it every day.

KRVM teaches REAL skills. The unique learning environment KRVM provides to our student broadcasters teaches valuable electronic media expertise, builds confidence, and strives to broaden appreciation of music. KRVM provides a hands-on vocational experience that benefits students in class and beyond.

  • With your donation, YOU make it possible for an amazingly diverse group of teens to thrive in the non-traditional setting of our Student Broadcast Program.
  • Working in small teams, they gain valuable experience hosting KRVM programming every weekday. Each student will learn digital audio editing, gain confidence and public speaking skills, conceive/script/edit/produce their own podcasts – and of course, be on the radio, to overcome barriers to media access so their voices can be heard.
  • KRVM is one of the very few stations in the country to provide broadcast training and experience to high-school students.

Your support of KRVM fosters good in the community, increases the safety and wellbeing of our listeners, provides non-traditional learning opportunities for high school students – and helps us all cope with the world around us. You can make a REAL impact – right here, right now – by renewing your membership today. Your direct, local support is more critical than ever.

Thanks to you, we are able to provide a quality, REAL listening experience that truly does make the world a better place, one song at a time.
