After my 1st quarter of college at the University of Tennessee, during which I successfully earned an astonishing GPA of 0.97, the academic dean’s office at the school determined that I needed some counseling. During the first session with my academic counselor, he asked me what my goals in life were. I told him I wanted to be a bartender or a radio DJ. Evidently, he wasn’t impressed. We never met again.
I did, in fact, end up graduating with a degree in Public Administration and a somewhat respectable GPA of 2.98. And I did become a bartender, which led to an exciting, interesting, and successful 40 year career in Food & Hospitality Management.
And now, 50 years after my meeting with the UT academic counselor, I’ve been given the opportunity to satisfy my second goal, and become a DJ on KRVM for the shows, Acoustic Junction and “Round Midnight .
I spent the first 30 years of my life in Tennessee, the next 33 years in Texas, and somehow, for the third third of my life have ended up in Oregon along with my wife of over 40 years. Three totally varied parts of this beautiful country of ours, with a variety of social, cultural, religious and political beliefs. I’m a lucky man.
Music has always been an important part of my life, and I enjoy a number of genres…from classical choral works to jazz standards to Appalachian Stringband tunes, and a lot in between. I’m fortunate in that I get to sing with three very fine choirs in Eugene: The Eugene Concert Choir, The Eugene Symphony Chorus, and the Central Lutheran Chorale. Other than music, my passion is hiking and backpacking in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. It’s a good life.
